So do you remember the name of the first song played for the launch of the new cable network MTV on August 1st, 1981?

“Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles!

That’s right, for almost 40 years people have been saying “radio is dead, radio is dead!”  The reality is today local radio is the strongest it’s ever been and TV stations like MTV are, well, let’s just say they’ve seen better days.

A recent study by the independent firm Edison Research reported that American’s spend more time each week listening to local radio than podcasts, satellite radio, streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, and MP3s…COMBINED!

That’s right, Americans spend 54% of their time listening to local radio…vastly more time than say streaming services (17%), satellite radio (7%), and podcasts (a whopping 2%!)

93% of all American’s reported to Nielsen Research that they listen to local radio every week.  I don’t know about you, but any time I can talk to 93% of any group I’ll take it!

The future is also bright for broadcasters as 91% of millennials listen to their favorite radio stations, too!  You just can’t beat local DJ’s talking about the hottest local concerts, events, and topics of the day.

So I’m sorry to report it to MTV and the Buggles, but local radio is rocking and it’s a fantastic way to tell your story to thousands of great local potential customers!
